To my friends, Albert Puig and Luis Cañas.
I would just like to thank you both for everything you’ve done for me these past 6 months. When I was a new intern at the hotel, I felt a bit uneasy due to the language barrier. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get along with any of the employees because of it. All my negative thinking was put to bed however when I met the both of you. You were both so welcoming and made me feel like a true part of the team and not just an inexperienced intern.
I spent the first half of my internship working at the hotel’s 2 bars: La Dolce Vitae and El Bar Del Majestic. To be quite honest, I didn’t enjoy the job. I found myself constantly dreading going to work and I didn’t like how negative I was every day. Then, I started getting closer to the team. We shared stories, funny moments that happened within the day, and they motivated me to just have fun when I’m on the floor. You (Luis Cañas) played a big role because you’d always make me laugh with your comments and stories about work, keep reminding me not to have any fear when I was worried I’d commit a mistake. It also helped a lot when I found out that you and I have the same interests, Rock music and football. From then on, I saw you as my friend and not just my supervisor. Seeing how you carry yourself while at work is inspiring because you have the ability to relax, smile, and find humor in stressful situations. You don’t get that a lot nowadays. I didn’t enjoy my job at the beginning but you and the team definitely raised my spirits. I see you more as the manager/boss figure and not our new F&B Manager Albert Sarda because you get involved with the team on a personal level and not just from a supervised/managerial standpoint. Also, because he came to the hotel 2 weeks before I left.
During the second half of my internship I was under Oscar Martin, the banquets manager of the hotel who also monitored room service as we did not have a designated room service manager. I had been working there for about 3-4 weeks before I was introduced to our official room service manager, Albert Puig, formerly from the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona. When I met you, I could already tell you were going to be a great manager for the team when I saw how devoted you were to the job. Every time I worked with you, I ended up having a good time, regardless of how busy it was. Like Luis, you found humor in situations where others would be cursing and throwing fits. Instead, you were laughing at how busy it was and with all the entitled guests we had to listen to. It made me enjoy my job, it made me more confident and less fearful. I saw you work 12 hours straight when we had issues with the lack of staff, and I saw you get your hands dirty like us. “I’m the manager, I have to lead for you to follow.” You always say. I admire that about you a lot because one could easily designate the work load among team members, but you chose to work with us. You have earned my respect 100 percent.
Thank you both, once again, for being my good friends these past 6 months and for all the help and inspiration. I look up to the both of you a whole lot. I hope we get to catch up in the future if I return to Barcelona.
Good luck and take care,
Jack Monk
